The land that would become Bishop Ranch has a long history. Originally granted to attorney Thomas Bishop in 1891 as compensation for legal services, it operated as working farmland for generations. Western Electric purchased the property in 1955 for manufacturing operations. In 1978, Sunset Development Company acquired the 585-acre parcel and began transforming it into a modern office and business park designed to serve Bay Area employers seeking space in the East Bay.

Today Bishop Ranch is one of the region's major employment centers, anchored by 2600 Bishop Ranch, the second-largest office building in the Bay Area. The park hosts over 550 tenants across its mixed-use campus. Major occupants include AT&T's West Coast headquarters, Chevron's global headquarters (relocated there in 2022), Bank of the West, General Electric, JPMorgan Chase, Ford Motor Company, PG&E, and SAP. In November 2018, the development added City Center Bishop Ranch, a shopping, dining and entertainment destination that serves both the business park workforce and the greater San Ramon community.

For workers and business owners at Bishop Ranch and throughout San Ramon, employment in the region creates both stability and planning obligations. Employees with families depend on their incomes, and business owners have responsibilities to their households. A term life policy of sufficient duration and amount ensures that a spouse, children, or business partners are protected if the primary income is lost. Companies increasingly recognize life insurance as part of comprehensive employee benefits and financial wellness.
